Chad Tough Foundation hosts fundraising garage sale

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – You've seen the CHADTOUGH sign outside the Carr house ever since 4-year-old Chad was diagnosed with a pediatric brain tumor last year. Now, there's a brand new sign that reads: RALLY FOR A CURE.

"We just got our letter yesterday," Tammi Carr said. "We are very early, but we are official. The Chad Tough Foundation is a legal entity."

The very first event sponsored by the foundation? A garage sale rally.

"We plan to have lots of different levels and ask for donations from corporations, but we wanted a grass roots effort that really got kids and families involved," she said.

The idea came about because little Chad loves garage sales.

"We're going to have this big box and when they say, 'I want this shell,' they have to pay and then when put it in the box," Chad said.

"And then the money goes to help kids with boo boos," Tammi added.

June 4-6 2015, 70 homes in the Carr's Centennial Farms neighborhood of Pittsfield Township will open up their garages for a community sale. Proceeds and donations will go to the Chad Tough Foundation. There will even be some Michigan fan favorites there.

"John Beilein will be here Thursday signing autographs for those who make a $50 donation or more," Tammi said. "Nik Stauskas is coming as well."

It's a small idea Tammi hopes will spread across the country and have a big impact on all kids with DIPG.

"There are people in Minnesota hosting a garage sale," she said. "There are people in Florida doing the same. Anyone can host one. There are templates for getting your community involved on the foundation Web site."

As for her little guy, he's still hanging tough.

"He's showing symptoms and we don't know for sure. We don't know if it's because of surgeries. We're still praying for a miracle and still hoping for the best. We're trying to create something good out of a horrible situation."
