Chelsea High School student, 17, killed in crash while fleeing police

Student fled police at high rate of speed, crash into tree, police say

CHELSEA, Mich. – A 17-year-old Chelsea High School student died Saturday when his car crashed into a tree as he was fleeing police.

Officers pulled the student over around 2 a.m. as part of a vandalism investigation, but he fled from officers at a high rate of speed, police said.

The student's car was found crashed five blocks away on Taylor Street near Moore Drive.

Police said the student, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.

The crash is under investigation by Chelsea police and the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office crash investigation unit. 

The Chelsea Police Department said it has been in contact with Chelsea Public Schools in regard to possible grief counseling for students.
