DETROIT – The memorial continues to grow near the scene where two New York police officers were ambushed and murdered while on duty.
The horrific crime has police leaders in departments across the country taking a close look at what can be done to keep their officers safe.
Detroit police are now on high alert, paying close attention to what's unfolding in New York, and very aware that some could see police as targets. Detroit police Chief James Craig spoke with Local 4 about his concerns, encouraging his officers to be extra vigilant.
While no procedural changes or security upgrades are being rolled out in the Detroit Police Department, others are taking action. Pittsburg officers are patrolling in pairs so as to have an extra set of eyes on watch for any potential problems.
Police are also doubling up in Newark and Redding, Pennsylvania, and in our nation's capitol an alert for officers to stay vigilant.
And at home in Detroit, Craig said officers have not received any new threats and that investigators are working around the clock, monitoring social media, on the lookout for any concerns.
So far, there has been growing support for officers and the challenges they face daily on the streets of our city.
And in New York, there's a call to stop all protests as the city works to move forward and focus on the lives lost and protecting the men and women still on the beat.
