HURON TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Huron Township police said they've made an arrest in a string of home break-ins that happened during the day while children were at home.
Police received two separate calls Thursday just before 1 p.m.
The first call came from a 13-year old-boy in the 25000 of Waltz Road at 12:54 p.m.
The boy reported that he was home alone and that a man was trying to get into his home by removing the screen of an open window. Police said officers were at the house within five minutes but the man had already fled. The boy wasn't hurt.
At 12:58 p.m., a 16-year-old girl and her 7-year-old brother called to report that someone was trying to break into the front door of their home in the 19000 block of Sterling Street.
"It sounds like they're banging the front door open," the 16-year-old is heard on a 911 call. "I'm in my bedroom closet upstairs with my little brother."
One of the officers who was initially responding to the Waltz Road incident was rerouted and responded the call. The two children weren't hurt.
The Huron Township Fire Department has a station located on Sterling Street across from the place where the attempted break-in happened. Two firefighters were able to see the scene and gave suspect vehicle information to responding officers.
A short time later, police were flagged down by a concerned resident who heard about the crimes and said he or she had seen the same vehicle that was observed in the Sterling Street incident picking up a suspect near the Waltz Road.
Investigators were led to a suspect in Southwest Detroit.
The suspect, a 28-year-old Detroit resident, was arrested Friday on first-degree home invasion charges.
Police said they also recovered the suspected getaway vehicle and stolen property. A second person is also being questioned by police.
"We are confident that these suspects are responsible for both of these home invasions. We cannot connect them to the other recent home invasions for certain. They are similar in nature and the investigation will continue," the Huron Township Police Department said in a statement.
