Church volunteer saves woman's life with Heimlich maneuver

EASTPOINTE, Mich. – A church volunteer is being called a hero after he performed the Heimlich maneuver and saved a woman who was choking.

It happened at the St. Barnabas Church on Phlox Avenue in Eastpointe while volunteers were feeding the homeless.

Pauline Gergics, the head cook, was choking on a piece of bread when Randy Wilson spun into action.

"I keep hearing people call me a hero," Wilson said. "I'm not a hero. I was at the right spot at the right time."

Wilson was recently elected to the East Detroit Board of Education.
