Cincinnati's police chief gushes about prospective job in Detroit

James Craig born, started police career in Detroit

DETROIT – There's new word in Detroit that the city could be getting closer to naming its next police chief -- and a Detroit native who now works in Ohio could come back home to take the job.

James Craig is Cincinnati's top cop right now. But he's already interviewed for the job and isn't shy about expressing his feelings for the Motor City.

"The draw is simple. I love the city of Detroit," Craig said, during an interview with NBC. "I was born there. I started my career in police there."

Sources tell Local 4 Craig could be offered the job this week.

"I'll tell you candidly, had it been any place else, I probably would have hung the phone up," Craig said.

In his two years as police chief in Cincinnati, crime numbers have gone down and morale is on its way up. Sources said the city and community are fighting to keep Craig. But Craig said turning down an offer for Detroit, should he get one, would be tough.

"Detroit is a city I still love … all of my family still lives there," he said.
