DETROIT – New details on the shooting that left one teen dead and another seriously injured after they allegedly tried to rob a girls' basketball coach. Police believe the teens tried to rob the coach, but the deceased teen's mother is telling a different story.
Both boys involved in the shooting attended Martin Luther King, Jr. High School in Detroit.
Family members tell Local 4, the suspected robber who was shot and killed is 16-year-old Michael Scott, a junior at MLK High School.
Michael's mother Priscilla Scott said he was once active with the basketball team and contrary to reports he was not expelled from the school when the shooting happened.
Local 4 sources say Ernest Robinson, the assistant basketball coach at MLK, was walking to his truck after Friday night's game with two girls. The coach told detectives the teens ambushed him with guns drawn. At one point, the teens pointed the guns at the girls and that's when the coach shot both of the teens.
Michael ran but collapsed in the median. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"I lost my son and I want answers," said Scott.
The other young man is still recovering at Detroit Receiving Hospital. He is still listed in very serious condition.
According to sources, coach Robinson was taken in for questioning Friday night and spoke with homicide detectives on Saturday.
The investigation is ongoing.
