An Ann Arbor woman has died and her husband remains in critical condition after their house caught fire Saturday morning.
The couple's teenage son was able to escape unharmed just before 9 a.m. when the fire broke out on Shady Lane. Unfortunately, the family dog, was also lost in the fire.
“It was pretty obvious once we pulled in that the house was on fire, the whole front of the house,” said Battalion Chief Kevin Cook.
Cook said the man told first responders that his wife was still inside. Rescuers had to get into the home from the back to pull her out. She was later pronounced dead at the University of Michigan Hospital.
Cook said a firefighter hurt his ankle and two police officers were treated for smoke inhalation.
Cook said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but that it was fueled was the amount of stuff that was inside.
“There’s an extreme amount of personal material in the house,” he said.
Sources told Local 4 the family was living in a hoarding-type situation.
