A 37-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the deadly fire which resulted in the deaths of his two young sons. Kevin Deon Washington was arraigned Tuesday afternoon.
4-year-old Damien Washington and 1-year-old Mekhi Williams died in the Dec.6 fire. The Detroit Fire Department was called to Washington’s home located in the 16830 block of Prairie just after 1 p.m. When they arrived the house was engulfed in flames. The two boys were found in an upstairs bedroom, transported to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead from the effects of the fire.
Washington has been charged with two counts of Involuntary Manslaughter (failure to perform a legal duty: failure to properly supervise the children so that defendant could help them escape from the burning house) and 2 counts of Child Abuse Second Degree (failure to perform a legal duty: failure to properly supervise the children so that defendant could help them escape from the burning house). Involuntary Manslaughter carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and Child Abuse Second Degree carries a penalty of 4 years.
