FERNDALE, Mich. – A high-speed chase through Metro Detroit involving an out-of-control mini van ended with a dramatic arrest.
Ferndale police got the suspect before he caused a major crash or took someone's life.
"He put a lot of innocent citizens at risk," said Ferndale Police Lt. Gary Whiting.
It all started early Monday morning. A police officer attempted to pull the man, Andre Porter, over on 8 Mile Road near John R. Road because he was speeding. What the officer did not know was Porter was on probation for drug-related offenses. He took off.
The chase began. Police video shows the mini van flying down Woodward Avenue and 8 Mile Road through neighborhoods. It briefly drives on a sidewalk. The van took out a sign. Porter reached speeds of about 85 miles per hour as he tore down the sidewalk.
Police had to make the tough call of chasing the man down.
"It's a big decision whether to continue with the pursuit or terminate it. You always have to weigh the safety of the public," said Whiting.
The mini van continued to speed as it went down streets in Detroit, Ferndale and Royal Oak Township. The officer called for backup. Police say Porter finally lost control on a sharp turn. He ran over a tree on the median.
It wasn't over yet. He took off running and almost was struck by a vehicle. Officers gave chase and quickly arrested him.
Porter was facing a speeding ticket, but now he faces serious charges.
