Details emerge about Lodge Freeway shooting suspect

MSP: Gunman has mental health issues

DETROIT – Michigan State Police say Tuesday’s shooting on the Lodge Freeway wasn’t a road rage incident, but are calling it a meltdown of a man with mental health issues.

A white Chrysler 300 slammed into the rear of a 56-year-old woman on the southbound lanes near 7 Mile Road in Detroit.

The impact broke the woman’s arm and hip. She wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and her face was slashed.

The driver of the Chrysler, a 64-year-old man from Southfield, grabbed a gun from inside his car and approached the woman.

“People notice he has a gun, they scatter, he walks up to the woman and points the gun at the woman inside the car,” MSP Lt. Michael Shaw said.

The gunman then walked back to his car and a good Samaritan in a dark-colored car pulled off to help.

The gunman fired a shot at the good Samaritan. Investigators are speaking with him about the incident.

The gunman drove 150 yards before he stopped on the shoulder again and unloaded more than a dozen high-powered firearms from his car before police arrived. He was taken into custody.

MSP, FBI and ATF all searched the man’s home overnight and found six more long rifles and stacks of ammunition.

It’s unclear whether the weapons are legal or not.

MSP says the man has mental health issues.

“We are not sure what the mental health is here, we will take a look, but maybe he’s not telling the truth,” Shaw said.

Claire Krewczak, a resident of Southfield, recognized the gunman on the news as her neighbor.

"He must have snapped," Krewczak said. "He just must have lost it and that can happen."

Neighbors said the suspect worked for years at a Chrysler Plant in Sterling Heights and was disgruntled.

Traffic on the southbound side of the Lodge Freeway was snarled and routed off the freeway. The southbound lanes reopened late Tuesday.
