Detroit-area schools review security plans

Connecticut shooting prompts reconsiderations of security at several Metro Detroit school districts

DETROIT – Several Detroit-area school districts have decided to revise their security policies in the aftermath of the deadly shootings at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

A Local 4 survey of local school districts found several had heightened security on the first day of classes since the Connecticut shootings.

In the Chippewa Valley school district, buildings were placed in a modified lockdown.  Interior classroom doors were locked while classes were in session.  No outdoor recesses are being permitted this week.

In the Troy school district, the main doors of school buildings will be locked temporarily.  Anyone seeking to enter the building will have to call a specified phone number or wait for someone inside to open the door.

North Farmington High School will have extra police patrols around the school building.

Rochester Community Schools will lock all exterior doors after students arrive for the school day.  Front doors to buildings will be monitored. Police patrols will be increased around school buildings.
