Detroit basketball coach not in police custody after deadly shooting in school parking lot

Coach Ernest Robinson says 2 teens were trying to rob him when he opened fire, killing 1

DETROIT – An assistant basketball coach at Detroit's Martin Luther King, Jr. High school has been released from police custody after a deadly shooting in the school's parking lot on Friday.

Assistant girl's basketball coach Ernest Robinson said two teens tried to rob him and two girls at gun point outside the school.

Robinson then opened fire shooting both the teens. Michael Scott, 16, died from his wounds and the other teen remains in serious condition in the hospital.

Family members say they are still in shock from the entire ordeal.

"This is still unreal to me. I can't believe that this has happened," said Calvin Stingall, Scott's older brother.

Court records show Scott was slated to go to trial in March for allegedly being one of two people behind an armed robbery at a Jet's Pizza on East Jefferson Street the day after Christmas.

Scott's mother had also told Local 4 that he was a junior at Martin Luther King, Junior high school, but DPS told Local 4 that at the time of the shooting the teen was not enrolled at any school in the district.

Family members say Scott had recently been hanging out with a new group of friends that may have led him down a wrong path.

"Everyone, I notice over time, gets in with the wrong crowd, and gets around different people. I think recently he may have been," said Stingall.

Investigators told Local 4 that the school is equipped with surveillance cameras and that will play an important role in the investigation.

Right now Robinson has not been charged in the crime.
