Detroit bus driver accused of driving while drunk had father, 3-year-old son onboard

53-year-old DDOT bus driver accused of driving with high blood alcohol level

DETROIT – Video shows Wayne State University police officers pull over a Detroit Department of Transportation bus Tuesday night at Woodward and Warren avenues.

The 53-year-old driver was suspected of driving while drunk. The first thing the officers asked him was, "How much have you had to drink?"

On the video, the driver slurs his words in reply. Photos show the driver, who is accused of being "super drunk," being put in handcuffs. His blood alcohol level allegeldy was twice the legal limit of .08.

The driver wasn't alone on the bus. Trinity Holloway and his 3-year-old son were along for the wild ride.

"He was stuck on the car. I was figuring that he would call for help or something, but he started pushing the accelerator, trying to pull the bus off the car. That's when I grabbed my son and I jumped off the bus," said Holloway.

Holloway called 911 after he witnessed the driver side-swipe a sport utility vehicle on Warren Avenue. The mirror on the SUV -- a Chevrolet Envoy -- was left dangling. The front bumper was ripped away.

The Envoy's owner, Derrick Bostic, said a city worker caused the damage and he wants the city to pay to fix it.

"I want my truck fixed. What do I want the city to do? To right my wrong. That truck wasn't moving, it wasn't bothering nobody. They hit it," said Bostic.

Holloway said he is taking his son, who used to love the bus, to the hospital because the boy was complaining of head pain. Holloway hopes no other passengers have to be a part of a ride which ends like this one did.

"I got my 3-year-old son on this bus and I'm coming home from work and I'm trusting this man to get me to my stop," he said.

DDOT and the city of Detroit said the driver has been suspended without pay and he could face further disciplinary action. The driver also could face charges of driving while impaired.
