Detroit City Council lays out specifics for new positions of chief financial officer, project manager

Each position, which are required under consent agreement, will pay more than $150,000

DETROIT – Detroit City Council is considering what the pay will be for the two new positions being created under the consent agreement with the state.

Those two positions will be the city's chief financial office and project manager.

The mayor's office sent a recommendation to the city council that the salary for the CFO be between $190,000 and $280,000.

A project manager director would make a salary between $160,000 and $250,000.

The city council understands attracting top talent public or private is the goal, but they also believe this is too sweet a deal.

"We needed to maybe sweeten it, but I think we went overboard with the sweet," said City Council member Saunteel Jenkins.

The council voted to cap the pay for the CFO at $190,000 to $220,000 and the pay for the Project Manager between $160,000 to $200,000.

"We knew this was going to be an ugly process. We knew that you can't get out of $200 million accumulated deficit and billions in structural deficit without some major restructuring," said City Council President Charles Pugh.

The state will need to agree to the cap before the process can move forward on making a hire.
