The Detroit City Council is expected to hear a resolution supporting a petition calling for the Justice Department to file civil rights violation charges in the shooting death of black Florida teenager Trayvon Martin.
Councilwoman JoAnn Watson is scheduled to present the resolution during Tuesday's council meeting.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is circulating the petition seeking federal charges against George Zimmerman.
A jury acquitted Zimmerman earlier this month of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in the 2012 slaying of the unarmed 17-year-old.
Zimmerman had said he shot Martin in a nighttime confrontation in his gated community in Sanford, Fla., where Martin was visiting family. Prosecutors portrayed Zimmerman during the trial as a vigilante who had grown frustrated by break-ins in the neighborhood.
