DETROIT -

Sources tell Local 4 Detroit City Council Member Kwame Kenyatta plans to resign from office on Friday.

Kenyatta, who has served two terms, has already said he wouldn’t be seeking re-election.

Sources said Kenyatta is upset over the role of Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr and feels the council is powerless.

Kenyatta also has been dealing with health problems that he hasn't publicly discussed in detail. He’s been on an extended leave of absence to deal with those.

Kenyatta has been critical of Mayor Dave Bing and the state's intervention in Detroit's poor finances. He made headlines in 2008 when he gave up on his foreclosed home, one of a handful of council members who had financial problems.

Detroit council members make about $74,000 a year.
