Detroit councilman Cushingberry's traffic ticket to be reissued

George Cushingberry stopped in January, given citation for failing to signal

DETROIT – Detroit City Council Presiedent Pro-Tem George Cushingberry will be facing a traffic ticket after all.

Detroit police say they will be reissuing a ticket stemming from the notorious January traffic stop during which marijuana and an empty liquor bottle were discovered in Cushingberry's vehicle. Despite the findings, police did not arrest Cushingberry or test him for sobriety at that moment. Instead, the councilman was issued a ticket for failing to signal.

However, the ticket was dismissed in court on Monday because the officer who issued the citation failed to show up for court. Detroit police said the officer was absent due to a paperwork mix-up. He had worked in the Detroit Police Department's Tactical Response Unit but was transferred to the city's 2nd Precinct in late November. The court notice was sent to the officer's old post, so he failed to get the message.

On Tuesday, police said the ticket would be reissued but didn't say when.
