Detroit driver accused of killing 33-year-old man who was crossing street

Michael Williams charged in death of Jason Gant

DETROIT – A 67-year-old Detroit man was charged Thursday in connection with a fatal car crash on the city's east side.

Police said Michael Daniel Williams was driving west on E. Warren Avenue near Cadillac Boulevard when he struck Jason Javon Gant, 33, also of Detroit.

Officials said Gant was crossing E. Warren Avenue when he was struck. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Williams was arrested at the scene.

He's charged with driving with a suspended license causing death and reckless driving causing death. He was arraigned Thursday morning in 36th District Court and is being held on $10,000 bail.

A probable-cause conference is scheduled for June 29, and a preliminary examination is scheduled for July 5. Both hearings will come before Judge Lydia Nance-Adams.
