Detroit father saves family, dies in fire

Man saves daughter from house fire

DETROITA festive night for one Detroit family turned tragic Saturday morning.

Damon Baker told Local 4's Shawn Ley that his brother, Patrick, was just 28 years old and that he worked to save the six people inside his home Saturday morning. But the smoke inside was so bad, he couldn't save himself.

"It was festive," Baker said. "But when everyone went to sleep that's when the fire woke him up."

When Detroit firefighters arrived, they couldn't wait for a medic -- the firefighters themselves had to perform CPR on Baker for 30 minutes -- but Baker died at the hospital.

Several adults suffered burns and cuts in the fire, but they're recovering, as is Baker's 10-year-old daughter.

"He got his daughter out," Baker said. "He didn't go down before he got his daughter out."

Detroit police homicide detectives spent Saturday morning investigating the home and speaking with neighbors about what happened, as one family copes with losing a loved one after enjoying a night together.

Right now investigators are still looking for a cause of the fire, but they don't believe it was suspicious.
