Detroit: Firefighter's bill appears to be in error

Firefighter says city hasn't been paying, mayoral spokeswoman says city has already paid

DETROIT – Detroit is responding to claims from a firefighter that the city isn't paying his medical bills.

Firefighter Scott Kasinec fell through the floor of a house Tuesday morning while battling a blaze on Maiden Street.

"My helmet came off. If I didn't have all of this safety equipment on, I probably would have been hurt really bad. But I'm good. The guys did a good job and rescued me," Kasinec told Local 4.

When asked why he wasn't being transported to the hospital to be looked over, Kasinec said, "There's reasons why I'm not going to the doctor. The city's not paying the bills."

Kasinec referred to a previous incident where he hurt his knee. "I was sent by the city to therapy and $800 in bills. They won't pay them," the firefighter said. He said he has collection agencies calling him.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan's spokeswoman, Alexis Wiley, told Local 4 that the city has found a payment they made on Kasinec's behalf in 2010 – and that it appears the bills were sent to him in error.

Wiley said any city employee who is hurt on the job is covered.
