Detroit man charged with manslaughter in 16-year-old brother's deadly shooting

DETROIT – Aavaire Johnson has been charged in connection to his 16-year-old brother's deadly shooting this week at a home in the 700 block of Tennessee. 

Police said Johnson told investigators it was an accidental shooting. His brother Shawn Johnson was struck in the shoulder and died during surgery at St. John's Hospital. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said his older brother Aavaire was playing with a handgun when he pointed it toward Shawn and the gun discharged. 

Aavaire Johnson, 18, faces the following charges:

  • Manslaughter
  • Aiming without Malice
  • Careless Discharge of a Weapon
  • Felony Firearm

He is being arraigned Thursday afternoon in 36th District Court.
