DETROIT - Detroit police have captured a prisoner who escaped from custody while being treated for a gunshot wound at a local hospital.
Police said 19-year-old Kenneth Hickman escaped Wednesday evening when the officer assigned to him left the room at Sinai Grace Hospital. Police say the officer believed the Detroit man was cuffed to the bed and he called for help once he realized Hickman had escaped.
Detroit Deputy Police Chief Steve Dolunt said Hickman's brother called police Thursday morning saying he wanted to turn Hickman in, but only if he would be given medical attention.
Officer Sam Pionessa said he arranged a meeting with Hickman's brother at Greenfield and Fenkell roads, and Hickman was taken into custody peacefully.
"He was in real rough shape ... he was in a lot of pain," Pionessa said.
Police say Hickman was arrested after he tried to rob a woman and man at gunpoint in her home May 9 and that Hickman was shot and wounded during the attempted robbery.
