Detroit police looking for gunmen who carjacked couple, sexually assaulted victim

Victims ambushed by 2 gunmen at stop sign

DETROIT – Detroit police are investigating a carjacking, robbery and sexual assault that happened early Tuesday morning on the city's east side.

Police said when a man and a woman in a Dodge Durango pulled up to a stop sign at 4 a.m. at East Remington Avenue and Charest Street they were ambushed by two gunmen who were dressed in all black.

The gunmen robbed the man, stole the SUV and then took the woman to a vacant area nearby and sexually assaulted her, police said.

The two victims were able to meet back up and call police from a Sunoco gas station in the area of East Outer Drive and Conant Street.

Rhonda Demps lives near the area and she was stunned find out a rape, robbery and carjacking took place right outside of her home.

"I have daughters, sons that come in and out, it could have been them and it's real scary," Demps said.

Police said they have found the victims' white Dodge Durango at Ryan and Nevada, but continue to search with a K-9 for the gunmen.

"We have got to be more observant and carful about what you do, watch your surroundings and all that," said Demps.

Anyone with information on the crimes is asked to call Detroit police at 313-596-5240 or Crime Stoppers at 800-SPEAK-UP.
