Hours-long standoff ends with empty house on Detroit's west side; police search for gunman

DETROIT, Mich. – An hours-long standoff with an empty house ended Wednesday morning as police believed a gunman had barricaded himself inside with a child on Detroit's west side.

Police said a group of people were playing dice near Kendall Street and Whitcomb Avenue when someone got upset and started shooting.

When officers arrived at the scene, they were fired upon with an AK-47 and returned fire, according to police. A K9 Unite tracked the shooter to a home in the 13900 block of Sussex Street.

D'Angelo Davis was named as a person of interest in the shooting, police said.

Police surrounded the home believing that the gunman ran inside the home.

Nine people left the home during the standoff, leaving a 4-year-old boy inside the house with the individual police believed to be in the home.

The Special Response Team was able to use a loud speaker to wake the child. The boy walked out of the home and officers went in to find the home was empty.

“Anytime someone fires shots at a police officer, you know, we take it very seriously,” Detroit Police Capt. Darrell Patterson said. “We take all shootings seriously, but when someone actually shoots at the police, and you know that the police are armed, there’s something wrong with that person, so hopefully we can get this person off the streets as soon as possible.”

Police said Davis is armed and dangerous.
