According to the criminal complaint, a sergeant with the Washoe County Sherriff’s Office in Reno Nevada was using a peer-to-peer file sharing program in an undercover capacity and found files of “investigative interest” from an IP address allegedly belonging to Martinez.

A file of investigative interest is defined as a file associated with keywords of has values related to material consistent with the federal definition of child pornography.

Over the course of a week, the sergeant was able download 14 incomplete but viewable files directly from the IP address. The complaint says that all of the files appear to depict real minor children engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

A federal search warrant was executed at Martinez’s Trenton home Tuesday. Computer media items were taken from the residence.

During an interview, Martinez allegedly admitted to using the peer-to-peer file sharing program and said that he “may have seen” child pornography files, according to the complaint.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig says Martinez has been with the department for 29 years.

Martinez has been suspended with pay, until he is charged.
