Detroit police officer charged in Macomb County shooting

Chief Craig says officer suspended; internal investigation underway

RAY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A Detroit police officer is being investigated for a shooting incident in Macomb County's Ray Township.

The Detroit Police Department confirmed officer Clifford Gullion has been suspended and an internal affairs investigation is underway. Gullion was arraigned on four felony weapons charges on Thursday.

In a statement, the Macomb County Sheriff's Office said a 911 call was made early Thursday morning to report shots fired into a home in the 16000 block of 29 Mile Road.

Five shots from a handgun were allegedly fired by Gullion, who was off-duty at the time, in retaliation to "alleged comments made about his caregiver wife," the sheriff's office said. The Sheriff said the shots were fired from a car in drive-by fashion.

The officer's wife is a caregiver at the home and was in a dispute with one of the homeowners.

No one was hurt during the shooting.

Gullion is being held at the Macomb County Jail.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the officer has been on medical leave and that he has been on Detroit's force since 2009. Gullion works in the 9th Precinct, Craig said.

"The officer has had his service weapon and badge taken away from him," said Craig. "Since he's been arraigned, he's now suspended without pay."

Gullion said during his arraignment that he had been on medical leave for 2 and 1/2 years after being injured in a car accident while on duty. He was scheduled to return to work on May 1.
