Detroit Police Officers Association addresses claims made by former co-chair of CORE

DETROIT – The Detroit Police Officers Association held a news conference Monday afternoon to address claims made by a former co-chair of the Committee on Race and Equality.

In February, Detroit police Chief James Craig started the Committee on Race and Equality (CORE) to examine perceived inequality in the department. In August, the committee submitted an eight-page report stating, in part, “numerous incidents which involved command staff in discriminatory practices… enough to conclude that the department has a growing racial problem.”

Craig came out against the report at a news conference last week saying there was “nothing of substance.”

The spokesman for CORE said they intend to file a policy grievance demanding the committee to be disbanded.
