Detroit police officers help apartment tenants escape fire

Fire started in building in southwest Detroit

DETROIT – This morning two alert Detroit police officers were able to help residents of an apartment building escape serious injuries after the building caught fire.

The fire started shortly before 5 a.m. on Vernor Highway near Central in Southwest Detroit.

The officers were able help three people escape the building and a fourth was able to climb out on an awning where she was rescued by Detroit firefighters.

At this time, the cause of the fire is not known.

Investigators will be searching the building for a possible cause once all of the hot spots are out.
