DETROIT – More than 200 Detroit police officers are ready to call it quits and retire after proposed cuts to their pension benefits.
Mark Diaz, with the Detroit Police Officers Association, said those cuts are substantial.
The city's contingency plans are in place with potential arrangements with other communities in case a large number of Detroit officers actually do leave.
While the city has reached agreements with a coalition of Detroit's unions, the DPOA and Fire Fighters Association have resisted, saying terms the city is demanding are too steep for members to accept.
Diaz said he remains open to hearing new ideas from Detroit's emergency manager.
