Police: Suicidal man with rifle near Detroit, Grosse Pointe Park border is in custody

Man was in apartment near Kercheval Avenue, Alter Road

DETROIT – Detroit police have taken a man into custody after a standoff Thursday morning on the city's east side near the Grosse Pointe Park border.

Police said the suicidal man, 46, was alone with a rifled inside an apartment near Kercheval Avenue and Alter Road. Police said he has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

A neighbor called police about an armed man about 8 a.m. Thursday. Officers said when they arrived the man threatened them, saying: "You wanna go to war?"

The man was taken into custody about 11:20 a.m. No one was hurt.
