Detroit police: Missing 6-month-old baby found safe; father arrested

DETROIT – Detroit police say a missing 6-month-old baby who was taken by her father has been found safe.

The father is in police custody. The baby is OK, police said.

Police issued an alert Tuesday morning for John Ellerbe Jones and his daughter Melondy Laira Jones. The girl's great grandmother told Local 4 Tuesday afternoon that the baby is doing fine. She said she talked to Jones. He told her he planned to turn himself in to police, but she didn't know when. He never left the city of Detroit, she said.

Police said Melondy's mother told them Jones took the baby for a walk without her permission in the 15700 block of Linwood. He never returned. The baby's great grandmother said this all stemmed from an argument.

Jones was also wanted on parole absconder warrant.

Police found the child and father Tuesday afternoon. The man will not face kidnapping charges, but he will face charges for the parole violation, police said.
