Detroit police seek shotgun-wielding robbery, assault suspect

DETROIT – A 57-year-old man is in custody after an armed robbery and assault Friday morning on Detroit's west side.

Police said the man entered a business about 8:15 a.m. in the 11400 block of Schaefer and acted as a patron. He requested to use the restroom.

Upon exiting the restroom, the man grabbed a shotgun, which was leaning against a counter in the business, and pointed it at the victim, Jaafar Saad. He demanded money.

Saad refused to hand over money. The suspect struck him in the head with the gun. Police said Saad tried to fight the man, who backed up and pulled the trigger. However, the gun did not fire.

The suspect fled the area on foot with the shotgun. Saad suffered lacerations to his head and needed four stables.

After the suspect left the auto shop, he ran down the alley and pulled the shotgun on a business owner opening his store.

Officers on patrol noticed a suspect matching the description and took him into custody.
