Detroit police take aim at domestic violence suspects in honor of fallen officer

DETROIT – The Detroit police took aim at domestic violence suspects and honored a fallen officer on Thursday with the launch of "Operation Smurfette."

Anna Hamilton was with the department from 1998 to her death in June, when she became the victim of a domestic violence incident with her husband. Both were killed in a murder-suicide.

During her career, Hamilton was awarded the Lifesaving Citation and Medal and was Officer of the Year in 2009.

"Operation Smurfette" is a city-wide initiative to arrest fugitives who have outstanding domestic violence warrants.

In 2013, a 7,735 domestic violence cases were reported in the city of Detroit. Included are cases involving property crimes, aggravated assaults involving weapons, robbery and rape. Thus far in 2014, a total of 5,548 cases have been reported with 2,474 warrants being submitted.Â
