Detroit police: Woman sexually assaulted by man with gun on city's northwest side

Woman was walking on Schoolcraft Street near Trinity Wednesday night when assault happened

DETROIT – Detroit police said a 20-year-old woman was sexually assaulted Wednesday night while walking down a street on the city's northwest side.

Police said the woman was walking on Schoolcraft Street near Trinity Street when a man confronted her with a gun and forced her into a vacant house.

Earlier this week, a similar incident happened to a 19-year-old girl on the city's east side.

"Sexual assaults have picked up lately. We're doing everything we can to curb this problem," said Detroit Police Sgt. Marvin Jones.

Jones leads the Detroit Police Department's sex crimes unit. He has stacks of sexual assaults cases on his desk. Police are warning women to be aware.

"Stay on a well-lit path. Have someone with you at all times," Jones said.

Jones said screaming and fighting is the best way to fend off an attacker.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Detroit Police Department's Sex Crime line at 313-596-1950.
