Detroit priest accused of molesting student now charged with child porn

DETROIT – Father Richard Kurtz was fired by the University of Detroit Jesuit back in 2001 after a long career teaching chemistry.

He was fired for an incident involving a minor. He apparently molested a U of D student while on a trip to Colorado.

The school reported the incident to Child Protective Services and Kurtz was able to avoid prosecution until 2011. He eventually pleaded guilty to the sex crime.

Now, years later, the priest is back in town and casting his shadow over the school, and over an entire class of new victims.

Here's what happened:

Two other priests found what they believed to be child pornography with Kurtz's belongings out of state, and at his resident in Clarkston.

The allegations are that back at the high school prior to the year 2000, Fr. Kurtz allegedly was secretly videotaping members of a sports team changing their clothes after games in the locker room. The school's president said no one knew about it.

Now, the videos have been found. All of the students have been told that a trusted teacher of theirs is accused of violating them.
