Anthony Adams told Local 4 his resignation was effective immediately, but that he had already decided not to pursue re-election to the board in November.

He has served in the past as the school district's general counsel and also as the deputy mayor of Detroit.

He said he plans to devote his full time to business opportunities.

"Mr. Adams possessed a level of professionalism in the Board President's seat that served the district, its schools and students well. He successfully identified useful roles for the Board of Education during a time of transition, as evidenced by his and Board Member involvement in creating and launching the most recent initiative involving charter schools," DPS Emergency Manager Roy Roberts said in a statement.
