Detroit teen shot and killed during robbery

Teen was walking with someone when two men tried to rob them

DETROIT – A Detroit mother is mourning the loss of her teenage son, who was shot and killed while walking to the store.

Demetri Green, 18, was gunned down at the intersection of Warren and Somerset on Detroit's east side Friday morning.

"Nobody will understand the pain that I feel. I don't understand it," said Demetri's mother Barbara Carreker.

According to Carreker, Demetri was walking with his sister's boyfriend to the store when some men approached them and tried to rob them, reportedly for Demetri's coat. The men started shooting and killed Green. Carreker said Demetri's sister's boyfriend, who has a gun permit, fired back, but the men got away in a SUV.  It is not clear if the men actually robbed them.

"I know there is someone out there who knows what they are saying," said Carreker.

Demetri graduated from Southeastern High School last year. His mother says he had a bright future ahead of him and never thought he would be taken by the streets.

"I weep for the parents on television. I never in my wildest imagination thought I would be one of these people," said Carreker.

Police are investigating the shooting.
