The Detroit Department of Water and Sewerage is extending its moratorium of shutoffs for delinquent residential customers until Aug. 25.
The department originally suspended shutoffs for 15 days starting on July 21. Monday was supposed to be the last day.
"In order to give us time to complete and implement the new plan with (Mayor Mike Duggan), DWSD is extending the moratorium on residential customers through Monday, August 25th. Shutoffs will continue on commercial customers with significant arrearages," said DWSD Director Sue McCormick in a news release.
McCormick said a new plan on how to handle overdue bills will be announced Thursday.
Mayor Mike Duggan says customers will have "one last opportunity" to come up with a payment plan. More than 400 people appeared at a city office Saturday to avoid a shut-off or get water restored.
Detroit Water and Sewerage had an 83 percent collection rate, which led to tens of millions of dollars in annual bad debt for the department.

All DWSD Customer Service Centers are now open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (extended from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.) and all centers have new Saturday hours from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The DWSD Customer Care Call Center is now open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays (extended from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.) and also has added the same Saturday hours as the walk-in centers of 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
