DETROIT – Detroit Mayor Dave Bing on Wednesday said he had accepted the resignation of Nathan Ford, the city's director for the Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department (BSEED).
Ford's last day is May 31.

He has accepted a new position in the private sector.
Raymond Scott, BSEED Deputy Director, will serve as the department's interim director until a permanent replacement is selected.
"Nate Ford provided steady and valuable leadership to the department for the past 18 months," Bing said. "We are grateful for his contributions and improvements he has made to the department and wish him well in his future endeavors."
BSEED initiatives during Ford's tenure as director included:
- Operation Compliance – coordinated enforcement and closure of 1,500 targeted businesses operating illegally. To date, the initiative has resulted in 80 percent compliance and capture of neglected fees.
- Demolition of approximately 3,000 vacant, open and dangerous buildings annually
- Restructuring for one-stop permitting and an expedited plan review process
- Revised records retention schedules; off-site archiving of building plans (comprising 100,000 square feet); and consolidation of office space, which saved more than $130,000 annually.
