Recent weeks have seen a surge in violence in Detroit, with the last week recording 54 shootings, six of them fatal.
Detroit police chief James Craig addressed officers Saturday evening during a roll call in northwest Detroit, and later acknowledged those officers are facing difficult challenges.
"This has got to be the toughest environment to police in America. I really believe that," Craig said.
The chief said he and his men and women are working on a new plan to stem the violence.
"We are going to be hitting those areas we know to have higher crime," Craig said.
Detroit residents who have been living with the increase in violence are hopeful this new approach will reverse the trend.
