Detroit-Windsor Tunnel reopens following safety exercise

First responders closed tunnel to run preparedness drills

DETROIT – The Detroit/Windsor Tunnel has reopened following its annual safety exercise Sunday morning.

For more than 10 years, Detroit first responders have partnered with Canadian first responders to exercise strategic and tactical capabilities in response to an emergency or terrorist incident occurring in the tunnel.

This exercise will enhance preparedness, test capabilities and build responder relationships between the United States and Canada.

Participating agencies include the Detroit Windsor Tunnel Company, Canada Border Services Agency, US Customs & Border Protection, Detroit Police Department, Detroit Fire Department & EMS Unit, Wayne County Homeland Security, Windsor Police Services, Metro Detroit Airport Department of Homeland Security, as well as several private ambulance services.
