DETROIT – A developer is turning Detroit mansions into rental apartments in the Brush Park Historic District.
A group is taking the homes and refurbishing them for young professionals. The say the demand is there for the spaces, but the space simply isn't there. So the developer, Michael VanOverbeke, has teamed up with several partners to develop an area just blocks from Comerica Park.
"The people that are moving downtown are looking for quality residential spaces," said VanOverbeke.
One of the mansions already renovated is a house called The Edmund. It's a three-story, 11,000-square-foot home built in 1885. The building is now a series of apartments with everything from granite counter tops to stainless steel appliances.
"There's a calling out there for people to be part of a resurgence of something new," said VanOverbeke.
The apartments rent for anywhere between $1,100 to $1,500, and half of the rentals at The Edmund already are spoken for.
