The 20-pound Puggle was brought to the Ferndale police station by a concerned citizen. While it was at the station, Lt. William Wilson said a dispatcher considered adopting it, but changed his mind. That's when two police officers and a lieutenant came up with the prank.
"They wanted to leave the dog tied up to the door where the dispatcher was at, and he wasn't home, so they figured the dispatcher was at his girlfriend's house and place in Southfield," said Lt. William Wilson.
The three took the dog to a house in Southfield that they thought was the girlfriend's and tied it up, but it was the wrong house and the homeowner called police in a panic that someone was trying to break in.
Wilson said once the prank was discovered, an immediate investigation took place and appropriate disciplinary actions would be handed down.
"There is no excuse for their behavior to happen," Wilson said. "It's infantile."
