Downtown Detroit to have streetlights replaced

DETROIT – The City of Detroit is becoming a brighter place at night thanks to new street lights being placed around downtown and surrounding areas.

Some of the lights downtown had to be completely replaced because they were so outdated, and floodlights are currently in their spot until instillation of the replacement lights are complete.

The Public Lighting Authorities has already replaced 62,000 lights in residential neighborhoods and plans to replace more.

The PLA says 99 percent of residential neighborhoods are lit with new street lights.

Residents in the area are pleased with the new lighting plan, and say they have been waiting a while for the lights to be replaced by the city.

“I’ve been through 3 mayors where lights have not worked,” said Victor Bowman, a nearby resident.

Bowman said his east side neighborhood is the last one to have replacement streetlights installed, and he has experienced a few troubles because of the dark nights.

“There’s been some crime. My car has been stolen out of my driveway twice,” Bowman said.

The project to replace the lights will be complete by the end of the year.
