PONTIAC, Mich. -

A driver who collided with an Oakland County Sheriff’s deputy last week at an intersection in Pontiac has died.

In a statement, the sheriff’s office said 25-year-old Joseph Markeese-U Lawton-Hooks died Tuesday from injuries he suffered in the crash -- which happened last Friday evening.

Lawton-Hooks was making a left off Johnson Street when his Chrysler Sebring collided with a fully-marked sheriff’s office Chevrolet Tahoe that was going north on Cesar Chavez.

The sheriff’s office said the deputy’s SUV was responding to an emergency call and had its lights and sirens on.

A 24-year-old passenger in Lawton-Hooks’ car remains in critical condition at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.

The deputy has since been treated and released from a hospital.

The sheriff’s office said it expresses its “deep condolences” to Lawton-Hooks’ family and is continuing to investigate the crash.
