Driver who fled police ends up crashing SUV into White Lake

Police had tried to stop driver for reckless driving

HIGHLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 55-year-old driver who fled police Wednesday morning when they tried to pull him over for reckless driving ended up having to be rescued from his SUV after it crashed into White Lake in Highland Township.

The crash happened just before 11 a.m.

An Oakland County Deputy attempted to stop a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer on White Lake Road for dangerous and reckless driving.

The driver continued at a high rate of speed and at one point locked up his brakes causing the pursuing deputy to crash into the rear of the Trailblazer.

The pursuit was terminated on Highland Road in White Lake Township until a deputy saw the vehicle enter a gas station parking lot and the pursuit resumed.

The driver, an Independence Township resident, ran off Duck Lake Road North, striking row boats across from Mitchell’s Landing, and drove into White Lake.

He was found unresponsive. Fire and emergency crews pulled driver out of the SUV. The driver was taken to

Huron Valley Hospital and is in stable condition under police guard.

The driver may have been under the influence of drugs and a search warrant was obtained for his blood, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

No deputies or civilians were injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
