Drivers in head-on collision in Highland Township both suspected of being drunk

79-year-old, 55-year-old suspected of drunken driving on Duck Lake Road

HIGHLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Both drivers involved in a head-on collision Thursday night are suspected of driving while drunk on Duck Lake Road in Highland Township. 

A 1994 Chevrolet Suburban crossed over the center line while traveling southbound about 10 p.m. on Duck Lake Road. The Suburban struck a 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer, which was traveling northbound on Duck Lake Road just north of Wardlow Road, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

The driver of the Suburban, a 79-year-old Highland Township man, was transported to McLaren-Oakland Hospital in Pontiac where he is listed in stable condition. Police suspected he was intoxicated. A blood sample to check his blood alcohol content was obtained under a search warrant. 

The 55-year-old Highland Township man who was driving the Trail Blazer also was taken to the hospital. Police and paramedics suspected he was intoxicated, too. A blood sample to check his blood alcohol content was taken with his consent. He then was cleared by doctors and held at the Oakland County Jail. 

The driver of the Suburban was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to the sheriff's office. 

The results of both blood samples are pending an analysis from the Michigan State Police Forensic Science Laboratory. 

The sheriff's office still is investigating the crash.
