DTW sees increase of almost 1 million passengers in 2016

ROMULUS, Mich. – Nearly a million more Metro Detroiters took to the skies in 2016 than the previous year, according to data from Detroit Metropolitan Airport’s Department of Financial Planning and Analysis.

Passenger traffic grew to 34,401,254 in 2016, an increase of more than 960,000 travelers compared to 2015.

“Throughout the year, we meet the current and potential airlines with the goal of maximizing air service from our community,” said Airport Authority Director of Air Service Development Joe Cambron. “Every new flight we are able to get provides more passengers who fill our terminals each day, gives our travelers better flying options and helps increase business opportunities for the region.”

The 2.9 percent year-over-year increase can be attributed in part to new domestic and international service, according to the airport’s Department of Financial Planning and Analysis.

“Customers have a choice when they fly and we want Detroit Metropolitan Airport to be their choice,” said Airport Authority CEO Joseph Nardone. “Our team works hard to attract new service and continue expanding offerings for local and connecting travelers. The steady increase of passenger traffic at DTW shows our efforts are paying off, but we will continue working hard to add new carriers and new routes, while still focusing on delivering a high level of customer service.”
