Eastern Michigan University is adding police patrols following murder of student

Sheriff, Ypsilanti police teaming up with campus police

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Eastern Michigan University students will see an increase in police officers around campus starting Friday.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's department and Ypsilanti police are collaborating with campus police to put more officers on the street following the murder of a student.

20-year-old football player Demarius Reed was shot and killed near an off-campus apartment building last Friday. A reward of $5,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest.

Reed's death comes months after another unsolved murder in the University's community.

23-year-old EMU student Julia Niswender was found dead in her bathtub in December of 2012.

On Thursday night, students attended an anti-violence march and vigil near the complex where Reed was killed.
